Emma Raducanu edged out Leylah Fernandez to win her maiden U.S Open Tennis Championship. Emma was a qualifier and was unseeded, as was her counterpart, Fernandez. The two made history as the first teenage qualifiers and unseeded players to reach the U.S Open final. Emma Raducanu, 18, is British while Leylah Fernandez, 19, is Canadian. The two played an impressive game but Miss Raducanu was the better player for the game. This year’s U.S Open Championship has been nothing short of surprising with Novak Djokovic denied a rare Grand Slam win. Djokovic was edged out by Russian Daniil Medvedev who took the opportunity to celebrate using a dead fish routine. Djokovic, on his part, was in tears after the huge loss.
Medvedev Denies Djokovic the title of the Greatest Tennis Player of All Time
Daniil Medvedev’s U.S Open win was his maiden championship win and has shown that he possesses the quality for top-class competition. He showed creativity and vigor and denied Novak Djokovic legendary status.
Djokovic was slated to become the greatest player of all time by winning a Grand Slam this championship year. As it stands, Rod Laver maintains his 52-year record as the only member of the exclusive Grand Slam club. Medvedev beat Djokovic in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the Men’s Singles Final.
Huge Loss for Novak Djokovic
For Djokovic, yesterday’s loss was a huge blow and cost him a very rare accolade, despite giving an impressive effort in the four major championships this year.
The 2021 U.S Open has been one of many surprises with legendary players such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal pulling out due to injury. Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam Women’s Singles champion, also pulled out of the U.S Open due to a torn hamstring. This came after she and her sister Venus withdrew from Wimbledon, also due to a leg issue.

Emma Raducanu Topples Leylah Fernandez in a Straight-Set Win
For the Women’s Singles Final, Emma Raducanu showed some championship-worthy quality with a straight-set win of 6-4, 6-3 against Leylah Fernandez. Raducanu’s journey has been a long one and her family, fans, and coaches back home were elated and honestly surprised with her win. Raducanu came in as a first-time qualifier and edged out all her competitors leading her to the final that she also conquered. On the other hand, Leylah Fernandez is a slightly more experienced tennis player but was also a qualifier. She put up a good fight all through the tournament, getting her to the final, but was bested by Emma Raducanu.
Superstitious Fernandez’s Magic Didn’t Work for a Second Time
Leylah Fernandez’sdad says he is a very “superstitious” person and did not attend the final, owing to concerns that he could interfere with Fernandez’s luck. In his words, “when something works, we don’t mess with it.” He says that he wears the same socks, shirt, and even underwear to the finals, owing to his superstitious nature. Unfortunately, his absence at the match or whatever other forces at play did not allow the game to go Fernandez’s way. He also said that he had blamed himself for her loss in another championship final she had lost. He had attended but the game did not go her way. Even so, Fernandez remains a player to watch out for and we hope that she takes this loss as another stepping stone to tennis glory. She has done so well in this competition, even edging out former Women’s Tennis Association World Number One, Naomi Osaka, in the third round.

Emma Raducanu Enjoying Life as the Top Player in the U.S Open
Emma Raducanu is elated with the win and she said that she is just “loving life” for the moment and has no major plans in the short term. Just a few weeks ago, Raducanu was not even in the top 10 in the U.K. She was not even in the draw and just made qualification. Together with Miss Fernandez, they have become the first qualifiers to reach the U.S Open Final and also the first teenagers to compete at a final since 1966. The two are likely to dominate tennis in the coming years but nothing is granted. Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez, however, have made history for getting to the final despite the two not being in the top 50 in the global women’s tennis ranking. Their summative ranking was more than two hundred making their advancement to the final that more impressive and meaningful. Follow us on Twitter @maniaincsports for more Tennis News and Updates.
