Tokyo 2020 Olympics Highlights and Results

The just-concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympics were nothing short of a spectacle. Among the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Highlights and Results was the fact that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was the first Olympic Games to be held during a pandemic and introduced new games including skateboarding, surfing, karate, sports climbing, and baseball. The host nation, Japan, outdid itself and despite growing criticism and protests by a section of citizens, held the games in a professional and well-calculated manner.

For the athletes, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be one to remember due to the difficult circumstances it was held in and its arduous nature. Despite the difficulties, a good number of athletes withdrew either out of contracting COVID-19 or opting to withdraw. Nevertheless, a majority of athletes turned up and gave their absolute best. The majority of athletes took the one-year delay after postponement as an opportunity to prepare for the Olympics and train even more. Tokyo 2020 Olympics Medal Standings

The biggest winners were the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Great Britain, and the team representing the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Kenya came in 19th. The United States led with a total of 113 medals, 39 gold medals, 41 silver medals, and 33 bronze medals. China followed with 88 medals, 38 gold, 32 silver, and 18 bronze medals. Japan was third with a total of 58 medals, 27 gold, 14 silver, and 17 bronze medals. Great Britain was fourth with 65 medals, 22 gold, 21 silver, and 22 bronze medals. Fifth was the team representing ROC with 71 medals, 20 gold, 28 silver, and 23 bronze medals.  Australia, Netherlands, France, Germany, and Italy followed with 46, 35, 33, 37, and 40 medals respectively. Tokyo 2020 Champions

For the athletes, among the biggest winners was Italy’s Marcell Lamont Jacobs who won the Men’s 100m and Men’s 4x100m Relay. The Men’s 100m win made Marcell Jacobs the world’s fastest man. Karsten Warholm of Norway made history by winning the Men’s 400m Hurdles and also setting the world record of 45.94. The result was also an Olympic record. The Men’s Decathlon gold medal went to Damian Warner of Canada while the gold medal for the Women’s Heptathlon went to Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium.

Surfing gold went to Carissa Moore of the USA for the women’s competition and Brazil’s Italo Ferreira for the men’s gold. Skateboarding gold went to Yosozumi Sakura of Japan for the women’s park skateboarding competition and fellow Japanese 13-year old Momiji Nishiya for the women’s street competition gold. Nishiya made history as the earliest Olympic gold medalist for Japan. On the men’s side, park skateboarding gold went to Australia’s Keegan Palmer while street skateboarding gold went to Japan’s Yuto Horigome. The US team won both Men’s and Women’s Basketball competitions while Women’s Rugby Sevens gold went to New Zealand and Men’s Rugby Sevens gold went to Fiji.

Team Kenya

For Kenyan athletes, the gold medalists were as follows.  Eliud Kipchoge retained his Olympic gold medal. Peris Jepchirchir took home the Olympic gold medal for the women’s marathon. Faith Kipyegon took gold in the Women’s 1500m and Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir took men’s 800m gold. The silver medalists were as follows. Timothy Cheruiyot who won the silver for Men’s 1500m. Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich won silver in the Men’s 800m. Hellen Obiri also won silver in the Women’s 500m competition. The silver for the Women’s Marathon went to Brigid Kosgei. The bronze medalists were as follows. Hyvin Kiyeng took bronze in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase and Benjamin Kigen took bronze in the Men’s 3000m. Team Kenya did pretty well in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and has made Kenyans proud. We at Mania Sports congratulate Team Kenya and want to appreciate them for the champions they are.

Paris 2024 Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics were not easy to hold and participate in, to say the least. They were held in very strenuous circumstances and brought the world together in a time that the world is undergoing a global catastrophe, COVID-19. Mania Sports congratulates all the athletes that won medals and everyone who participated. The games were held with a lot of professionalism, precaution, and overarching facilitation and planning. The next games will be held in Paris in 2024.
