Matchweek 8 of the English Premier League has seen Southampton take the lead in the league table for the first time ever. Southampton took a 2-0 lead in their match against Newcastle United in St. Mary’s Stadium with goals from Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams. Che Adams was named man of the match after his seventh-minute conversion of an assist from Theo Walcott (pictured above). Stuart Armstrong netted the winning goal in the 82nd minute before Southampton were denied a third. Southampton or the saints are now at the top of the league table with 16 points, followed by Liverpool also with 16 points. Friday’s games also saw Brighton draw 0-0 with Burnley.

UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Manchester United have put behind their 2-1 loss against Instanbul Basaksehir in the UEFA Champions League group stage to beat Everton 3-1 in this EPL matchweek. Everton netted their only goal in the 29th minute that was scored by Bernard. Manchester United won after a brace from Bruno Fernandes, who netted in a superb header converting a cross from Luke Shaw. After a failed attempt from Lucas Digne of Everton, Fernandes netted in his second, converting a cross that eluded Marcus Rashford. Harry Maguire thwarted attempts from Calvert-Lewin of Everton to equalize with United sealing victory in stoppage time.

Edison Cavani

The third goal for Manchester United was Edison Cavani’s first in the English Premier League, after joining the team from PSG at the start of the season. Bruno Fernandes won man of the match and has proven a leader in his control and proficiency with the ball. Saturday’s game at Goodison Park was a shift from losing ways for Manchester United, whose manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has recently been in the limelight due to calls for his resignation or sacking. Manchester United went up to 13th place in the league table with 10 points.

Saturday’s Matches

Crystal Palace beat Leeds 4-1, and Sheffield United were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Palace have a good team with the likes of Eberechi Eze, Wilfred Zaha, and Jordan Ayew. The team moved up to sixth place in the league table after their 4-1 win at Selhurst Park. The four goals came from Scott Dann, Jordan Ayew, Helder Costa, and Eze, his first in the EPL, a curling free-kick. Patrick Bamford scored Leeds’ only goal. Zaha was awarded man of the match and assisted Ayew’s goal.

Chelsea trampled Sheffield United after goals from Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, and Timo Werner. Werner is proving to be a valuable asset for Chelsea and is exceeding expectations in his dominance as a forward and also in the midfield. Silva’s and Werner’s goals were scored inside four minutes and were proof of Chelsea’s prowess in the match. Chelsea came from behind to beat Sheffield United and went up to third on the league table with 15 points. Frank Lampard’s side is likely to have a stellar season owing to the young talents playing for the club. Saturday’s last match is between West Ham and Fulham and is currently in halftime with a 0-0 draw. West Ham later went on to beat Fulham 1-0 after a goal from Tomas Soucek in stoppage time.
